After you've moved to a new residence for about one or two years, you can contact the utilities to request refunding your deposits, or you instruct them to use these deposits to pay the current balance due on utility bills. Certainly, you
need to be in good standing paying bills on time for them to

If you're in business, you may ask the utility companies to
refund the deposits after certain time, which could amount to
hundreds or thousands of dollars. Some utilities even pay you
interest on the deposits.

deposits, the length of time that utility companies hold your
utility deposits varies; so, you need to contact them for
information.

In case you move away and forget to ask for your deposits, or
the utility can't reach you because invalid mailing address,
after certain time, your utility deposits are considered
abandoned. Your local city will follow the federal guidelines
on what to do with the Unclaimed Property.
